Sarah Hobart "Sally" Smith

Smith, Sarah Hobart “Sally” - of Truro died on her 95th birthday, Saturday, March 26 at Shannex Cedarstone Enhanced Care Facility in Truro, after a lengthy illness.
Born in Truro in 1916, she was the daughter of Charles Adams and Ruby McDougall Archibald. She was educated at Willow Street School, and Colchester County Academy.
After finishing high school, Sally attended Success Business College in Truro. Upon graduation, she secured employment as legal secretary to a young lawyer, G. I. (Ike) Smith at the then new law firm of Patterson, Smith in Truro. Ike Smith became the love of her life and the two were married at First United Church, Truro in 1938.
Sally kept up the home front while Ike served overseas with the North Nova Scotia Highlanders throughout World War II. Later she assumed the lead role in raising their three children while Ike served in the Nova Scotia Legislature as MLA for Colchester County. Sally was Ike’s right hand during his time as Cabinet Minister and Premier of Nova Scotia, and later Senator.
Sally was an active participant in the political life of both Colchester County and Nova Scotia. She worked in Ike’s campaigns, and travelled with him, sometimes as his chauffeur, as he toured the province in his government and political work. She was also active in the Women’s Progressive Conservative Association, both in Colchester County and provincially. She was honorary president of the provincial Association from the 1960s until the winding down of the organization last year.
Sally always enjoyed the bi-weekly Saturday Night sessions of the Bridge Club of which she and Ike were part. She loved the summers with the family at the cottage at Spencer’s Point. For a number of years she was superintendent of the nursery component of the Sunday School at First United Church, Truro. She was also active in Unit N of the UCW (United Church Women), and the local chapter of the IODE.
Sally was known for her sweet tooth and her cooking. Her mincemeat, pies, short cakes, coconut macaroons, and corn cake were renowned among family and beyond.
Ike died at Christmas time in 1982. Sally was also predeceased by her parents, and her only brother, Clarence, who was killed in action in World War II. She is survived by her three children Rob (Doralee), Waverley; Alison (Alan MacLean), and George, both of Truro; grandchildren Andy MacLean, Halifax, Sarah (Aaron) Emery, Toronto, and Isaac Smith, Waverley . Also surviving are her nieces Mary Bentley, Lower Sackville, Sharon Smith, Truro, nephew Joel Archibald of Bridgewater area, and grandnieces and grandnephews.
Thanks are extended to caregivers Doreen Brodeur, Norma Ramsay Moore, Komang Duff, Marilyn McNeil, Debbie Hoyt, and Sandra Breckon, as well as Dr. Frank Slipp, the staff of Cedarstone, the staff and Palliative Care Unit of the Colchester Regional Hospital.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will take place at Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow Street, Truro on Monday, March 28 from 7-9 p.m. The funeral service will be held in First United Church, Truro on Tuesday, March 29, at 2:00 p.m., Rev. Judith Perry officiating, assisted by Rev. David MacNaughton. Interment at Robie Street Cemetery, Truro.
