Alvin George Gusaas of Moose Jaw, and formerly of Mortlach, passed away surrounded by his family on Thursday, March 31, 2011 at the age of 86 years. Alvin was born on November 2, 1924 on the family homestead in the Eastleigh District, where he resided with his parents. Alvin met Phyllis Johnston in 1952 and they were eventually married on June 11, 1960 in Kelowna, BC. After their honeymoon, they returned to the family farm, the place where Alvin was the happiest and they raised their family. Alvin served on the RM of Rodgers from 1971 – 2008. He was one-of-a-kind, always marching to his own drum and he loved to tell jokes. He also enjoyed listening to Warrior games on the radio, discussing current events, the weather, and picking crocuses in the spring. Alvin and Phyllis semi-retired from farming in 2003, and made their home in Moose Jaw. He is predeceased by his parents George and Jennie Gusaas, sister Myrthe in infancy, his daughter Wendy in infancy, his son Wayne, brothers-in-law Frank Holeksa, Gaston Gaucher, Harold Johnston, and sister-in-law Irene Gaucher. Alvin is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Phyllis – Moose Jaw; daughter Wanda (Kelly) Ridley – Moose Jaw, son Brian Gusaas – Saskatoon; grandchildren Ashley Ridley and Steven Ridley – Moose Jaw, Madelyne Gusaas and Elliott Gusaas - Warman; sisters Muriel (Hardy) Wutke, and Inez Holeksa – all of Moose Jaw; sister-in-law Theresa Johnston – Kelowna; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and many cherished friends. In keeping with Alvin’s wishes, there will be a private graveside service. Della Ferguson will officiate. In Alvin’s memory, donations made to a charity of choice, would be appreciated.
