Douglas Stuart "Doug" Smith
Smith, Douglas Stuart "Doug', 76, of Dartmouth, passed away on July 19, 2009, in Dartmouth General Hospital. Born in Dorchester, N.B., he was a son of the late George and Rita (Ripley) Smith (Amherst).
Doug attended Mount Allison Academy, Sackville, N.B., in 1950. In October 1951, he joined the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. His basic training was in Ottawa and Regina.
Doug was posted at a number of detachments in the mainland of Nova Scotia, retiring in May 1988 with the rank of Staff Sergeant as the Commander of the Lower Sackville detachment. He was predeceased by his first wife, Bette (Grant) of Pictou and sister, Connie (Bert) Dykeman (Fredericton, N.B.). He is survived by his wife, Julia of Dartmouth; daughter, Paris (Larry) Olsen of Haileyberry, Ont.; son, Sandy (Shannon) of Surrey, B.C. and Julia¹s son, Robert of Ottawa, Ont.; sister, Audrey (Doug) Embree, of Fredericton, N.B.; brother, Don (Doris) Smith of Nepean, Ont.; along with five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Doug was a member of the RCMP Veterans Association of Nova Scotia, Centennial Branch No. 160 of the Royal Canadian Legion, the Eastern Light Masonic Lodge, Guysborough Co., and the Woodlawn Masonic Lodge No. 131, Dartmouth. Doug had a great knowledge of the back roads of Nova Scotia and enjoyed acting as a tour guide to share these secret routes and spots with visitors of our province. "The old road was always the better road." Cremation has taken place. A Masonic service was held on Thursday, July 23, at 6:45 p.m. in Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St. Dartmouth followed by visitation from 7-9 p.m. A Legion service was held at 10:45 a.m. Friday followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m., Rev. Patricia Mail officiating. A reception followed in the Centennial Branch RCL, Main Street, Dartmouth. Special thanks to the doctors, nurses and staff of the third floor of Dartmouth General Hospital.
