It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Annie MacVarish, 92, of Maple Hill Manor and formerly of Ross Avenue, New Waterford, on July 27, 2009, at the manor.
Born in Glace Bay, she was a daughter of the late James and Jessie (Gillis) MacNeil.
Annie was a member of the Parish of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Church, New Waterford. In earlier years, she was employed as a cook at the Cape Breton Hospital and the Children’s Training Centre in Sydney. Annie loved to cook and bake but mostly enjoyed taking care of her family.
Surviving are daughters, Patricia (Mel) Broughton, Chatham, Ont., Claire MacDonnell, Port Hawkesbury; son, Brian (Amber) Kennedy, New Waterford; grandchildren, Trevor Deakins, Ryan Deakins, Lisa Uher and Shawn Kennedy; great-grandchildren, Tieler, Lauren, Emily and Claire. Annie was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Besides her parents, Annie was predeceased by her first husband, Joseph Kennedy, second husband, Hugh MacVarish, brothers, Mike, Bernie, Simon, Francis, John, sisters, Gert, Belle, Millie, Kate and Florence.
Visitation will be held today (Wednesday) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral mass to celebrate Annie’s life will take place Thursday, July 30 at 10 a.m. in the Parish of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Church with Fr. Paul MacNeil officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery with a luncheon to follow at the Carmel Centre, New Waterford.
