The family of Joanne (Huntley) MacInnis regret to announce her passing on Sunday, April 3, 2011 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, she grew up in South Bar, the daughter of Claude and Edie (Hill) Huntley. She attended South Bar School and graduated from Riverview High in 1968. Following graduation Joanne attended NSTC from ‘68-’70. She was a teacher at South Bar School for 30 years and retired from Harbourview Elementary, as a reading recovery teacher in 2005.
Joanne was active in the Nova Scotia Teachers Union for many years both locally and provincially. She was a member of Trinity United Church in Whitney Pier and served on many committees there as well.
She loved the outdoors, swimming, camping and spending many happy times on the “North Shore”, the home community of her husband, father, and many good friends.
She is survived by her husband, Charles; son, James Andrew (Deanna) and grandchildren, Morgan and Jimmy, the pride of her life, Sydney and Peter Hugh, Yamato City, Japan. Sisters, Susan (Ken) Latham, Herring Cove, N.S., Patti (Brian) Murray, Calgary. Nieces, Laura, Herring Cove and Nicole Latham Calgary, Kristen (Dean) Dockerill and great-nephew, Colby, Calgary, as well as many other relatives and good friends.
Joanne was predeceased by her mother, Edith; father-in-law, Murdoch MacInnis; cousin, Peggy and dogs, Pepper, Scooter and Baillie.
There will be visitation on Thursday, April 6 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Sydney Memorial Chapel. A memorial service will take place Friday at 11 a.m. in the chapel with Dianne Kempt DLM and Rev. Jackie MacDonald officiating.
Any acts of remembrance can be made to the SPCA, Trinity United Church or the Arthritis Society of Canada.
