It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our dad, Gordon Peckham of Park Street, New Waterford on Tuesday, July 28, 2009 at home.
Born and raised in New Waterford, dad was the son of the late Matt and Rachael (Turbot) Peckham. Dad was a member of the Salvation Army Church in New Waterford. He worked as a coal miner for over 30 years in #16 colliery. He also played sports in his younger years, especially hockey and ball. Dad loved sitting home and watching his favourite Toronto Maple Leafs games; they were his idols. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and friends at the bungalow in Cheticamp but most of all he loved his family and friends’ company.
Dad was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Dad is survived by his sons, Raymond (Raylene), Halifax, Gordie (Fran), New Waterford, John, Sydney, and Donald, at home; daughters, Valerie (Cameron) Gillis, Brenda (Billie) Sharpe, both of New Waterford, Maureen (Jimmy) Simms, Glace Bay; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Dad was predeceased by his loving wife of 56 years, Mary Frances (Slaney) Peckham; his sister, Elizabeth Kavanaugh; brothers Wilfred, Henry, John, Nathan, Jake, Bernie and Wally.
Visitation will be held today (Thursday, July 30) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral service will take place Friday, July 31 at 2 p.m. in the Salvation Army Citadel, New Waterford, with Captains Cyril and Eliza Keats officiating. Gordon’s remains will be taken to the Salvation Army Citadel at noon on Friday. Burial will be in Union Grove Cemetery, Scotchtown with a luncheon to follow at the Salvation Army Hall, King Street, New Waterford.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Salvation Army Citadel in New Waterford.
Online expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.vjmcgillivray.ca.
Thank you Dad
for listening and caring,
for giving and sharing,
but especially for just being you!
