Josephine died peacefully on Tuesday, April 5, 2011 at home surrounded by her family.
Born in St. Margaret’s Village, Victoria County on April 20, 1921 she was the daughter of the late Patrick and Lena (Capstick) LaRusic.
She graduated from Normal College in 1941 and later taught in Bay St. Lawrence, Dingwall, Ingonish and Washabuck. She was a founding member of the Home and School Association in Dingwall and Washabuck. In later years she worked at the Oyster Farm in Portage, Victoria County.
She was a dedicated community member who gave generously of her time as a member of the Holy Rosary Altar Society and Washabuck Community Centre and was a member of the St. Columba Parish CWL. She was well known for her Scottish oatcakes and generous donation of baked goods to community events. She enjoyed sewing and quilting and taught sewing in the community for several years. She was awarded “Volunteer of the Year” in 1993. She was an avid card player and provider of many sets of homemade mittens and socks for her children and grandchildren. She rooted for the Blue Jays and was an avid fan of curling and golf.
She is survived by seven daughters, Anne Chisholm, (John) Antigonish, Sandra Stevens (David), Cole Harbour, Alice MacLean (Bruce Campbell) Calgary, Martina MacLean (Michael Ervin) Calgary, Joanne Dalton (Andrew) Halifax, Theresa MacIsaac, (Anthony) Cole Harbour, Maureen MacLean May (Darrell) Chezzetecook and one son Jim (Sandra Sampson) Lower Sackville; two sisters Evelyn Lindsay, Antigonish, Theresa Turner, Neil’s Harbour; brothers, Jim, Bay St. Lawrence, Ignatius, Montreal, and Joe, B.C.; 17 grandchildren, Donald (Kellie) & Julie Chisholm (Aly Mawji), Denise Stevens, Leslie and Daryl Campbell, Brendan Ervin, Kim Dabrowski (Dominik), Jennnifer, Leslie, Andrew and Patrick Dalton, Karl (Tara) Kyle and Daniel MacIsaac, Colin MacLean (Amy) and Cally and Cameron May and nine great-grandchildren Jayden & Lexie Stevens, Emily and Shelby Chisholm, Nahla Mawji, Hendryk and Arthur Dabrowski, Bronwyn MacIsaac and Charlotte MacLean.
She was predeceased by her husband Joseph (Joe Red Rory) MacLean (1998); grandson Jeffrey Stevens (2002); sisters, Anne McEvoy, Mary Chenier, Rita MacDougall and Sister Patrice LaRusic CSM and brothers Emery, Tim and Tony.
Arrangements have been entrusted to MacAskill’s Funeral Home, Baddeck. Visitation is 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Friday, April 8 at Washabuck Community Centre. The funeral will be held at St. Columba Parish Church, Iona Saturday, April 9 at 11 a.m., with Rev. Paul Abbass officiating. Interment will take place in Holy Rosary Cemetery, Washabuck. Reception to follow in Washabuck Community Centre.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Josie’s memory may be made to the Holy Rosary Cemetery Fund, Washabuck Community Centre or charity of choice.
