McCULLY, Helen M. – 83, Bible Hill. It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother on Tuesday, April 5, 2011, at her home. Helen is survived by her daughter, Sandra (Robert); grandchildren, Meghan (Leo) and Gillian; her special sunshine, great-granddaughter, Gianna, all of British Columbia; sister, Irene; brother, Weldon, St. Catharine’s, Ontario. Helen was predeceased by her parents, Jessie and Roy Fleck; husband, Laurie (1982); daughter, Jill (2005); brothers, Adin, Benjamin, Murray, Roland; sisters, Jennie, Beulah. Helen was a bright, strong and energetic woman who was born in Truro and raised in Stewiacke. In her younger years, she raised her family, worked beside her husband restoring and painting cars and during the lumbering seasons cooked over a wood stove for hungry lumbermen. Later she cooked for the former Murphy’s restaurant on Prince Street in Truro. She loved nature, camping and trekking through back woods and could easily remember the names of all local birds. She was an active member and diligent supporter of Saint David’s United Church and a member of the UCW (Rebecca Unit). She loved keeping in touch with her family afar…BUT you knew better to call if her beloved Toronto Maple Leafs were playing. She would always welcome you into her home with a smile and a fresh baked treat. We were blessed to have her in our lives for so long; she left a rich legacy of courage, compassion and delightful sense of humor. A special thank you to all the caring people who were part of her life; there are too many to call by name, but you know who you are, take peace from that and from the time you spent together. A celebration of Helen’s life will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, April 13, 2011, at Saint David’s United Church, corner of Pictou Road and St. David’s Avenue, Reverend Dan Gunn officiating. Reception will follow in the church hall. Interment in Bible Hill Cemetery. Family flowers only. If so desired, donations in Helen’s memory to Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or Canadian Cancer Society are welcomed. Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall ~ Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro. Private messages of condolence may be sent to the family by visiting the “Guest Book” at: www.mattatallvarnerfh.com
