Barbara Allison Lewis, 71, a resident of Harbourstone Enhanced Care, formerly, Alexandra St., Sydney, passed away Friday, April 8, 2011, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Kendall and Josephine ‘Jo’ (Stevens) Ferguson.
Barbara was actively involved with both, provincial and federal Progressive Conservative parties, campaigning for former Ontario Premier, Bill Davis, Nova Scotia premiers, John Hamm, Senator John Buchanan and Donald Cameron, and federally for Brian Mulrooney and Jean Charest. While living in Ontario, Barbara acted as the court representative dealing with placement and adoption for Ontario’s Children’s Aid Society, before serving as their business administrator for five years. Upon returning to Cape Breton, she made time for the Seton Foundation Project, involved in building homes for low-income families.
Barbara served on the Board of Every Woman’s Centre for six years. She was president of the Injured Workers Association, personally winning over 600,000 in claims for Cape Breton injured workers. In 1998, she became involved with the Joint Action Group, as secretary and was elected vice-chair for the Health Studies Working Group. Barbara was the former owner of Star Dairy on George Street, operated a small craft business and was a certified master knitter. She was also a CASE worker, helping small business get started.
Surviving are her sons, Leland, Sydney and Laurence (Sanela), London, England; sisters, Joan Killam, Alberta and Micki Burton, Halifax; brother, Kendall (Carol), Ontario; and granddaughter, Mary Lee Lewis, Ontario.
Barbara was predeceased by her husband, Albert and brother, Alexander ‘Sandy’ Ferguson.
Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Monday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held in the chapel on Tuesday 2 p.m., with Rev. Robert Hussey officiating. Interment in Loch End Cemetery.
