Barbara Joan Locke
Locke, Barbara Joan, 80, Brookfield, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 9th, 2011 at the Colchester Regional Hospital Truro. She was born in Truro, January 10, 1931, daughter of the late Everett and Ora (Burrows) Dillman. She attended school in Brookfield and the Colchester County Academy, Truro. She worked as a bookkeeper at the Farmer’s Co-Op in Brookfield for a few years and in 1951 married Rev. Frank Locke, a Baptist minister, also from Brookfield. They lived in Barss Corner, where she taught school one year; Dartmouth; Ottawa, where she worked part-time for the Income Tax Department; Bedford; Truro; Charlottetown; and for the past 22 years in Brookfield. She was a loyal supporter of her husband’s ministry, especially working with the Baptist Women’s Missionary Society, and was a Dominion Life Member of that Group. She loved to read, knit, quilt, and sew. She traveled extensively with her husband to Israel, Egypt, Greece and Europe, as well as in the USA and Canada. She was a devoted mother, and extremely proud of her sons and their families. She had a quiet and confident Christian faith that sustained her in life and in death. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her mother’s husband, Warren Moore; her grandmother Nettie (Nan) Burrows, with whom she lived for a number of years; sisters-in-law, Reta (Raymond) Purdy, and Marjorie (Glenn) Illsley; brother-in-law, Wayne (Wendy) Locke; and sister-in-law, Verna (Don) Locke. She leaves to mourn besides her husband of 59 years, her sons, Kenneth of Port Elgin, ON; Peter, wife Mary and their daughters, Tiffany, Marissa and Siobhan, Ottawa; Evan, wife Clare and their daughter, Olivia, Porters Lake; David, wife Kristan and their sons, Ian and Elliott, Riyadh, Saudia Arabia; brothers-in-law, Don Locke, Glen (Shirley) Locke, Keith (Eldora) Locke; sister-in-law, Ruth (Leon) Colburne; aunt Geraldine (Victor) Burrows; and many cousins, nephews and nieces. Visitation will be held 2 to 4 pm today, April 11, followed immediately by a celebration service, conducted by Rev. Eric MacKinnon, assisted by Rev. Jack Palmer, all in the Brookfield Baptist Church. A family committal service will be in the Brookfield Eastside Cemetery. A reception will follow in the church hall. Donations in Barbara’s memory may be made to the Brookfield Baptist Church, or to a charity of your choice.
