May 5, 1921 – April 8, 2011
Born May 5, 1921 to Lillian (Johnson) and Gordon Grant in Scotch Hill. Wife of Clarence Porter, of Stellarton. Mother to David Porter, Phyllis (John) Baker, Alan Porter, and Joan Porter. Grandmother to her only grandchild, Christopher D’Eon.
Predeceased in 1970, by her two sons, David and Alan, also by her sister, Olive (Leland) Perry and brother, Peter (Anna) Grant.
Schooled in Scotch Hill until the age of 12, when the family moved to their farm in Abercrombie, Gladys completed her high school education at New Glasgow High, whereupon she entered the work force. Positions included the Aberdeen Hospital, Spiro’s, Simpsons, and Trenton Works. She then worked for Goodyear’s in Toronto during wartime.
Gladys returned home to marry Clarence Philip Porter, and to become a homemaker for her husband, and mother to their four children. She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Church, and a valued volunteer of the Catholic Women’s League. She was also a volunteer with the Pictou County Food Bank.
Gladys took great pride in her home, and was admired for her tireless work ethic, culinary skills, and her flowerbeds. She looked forward to berry season, and her favorite place was sitting among the wild blueberries on Blue Mountain. Her remains will rest in the H.C. MacQuarrie Funeral Chapel, Stellarton, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church, Stellarton. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
If so desired Gladys’s favorite charity was the Pictou County Food Bank followed by the Nova Scotia Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Arthritis Association.
