Lieu de décès : Halifax, Nouvelle Ecosse, Canada
Date de décès : 9 avril 2011

It is with broken hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Chief Myles  F. Burke, MOM, on Saturday, April 9, 2011, in Halifax, at the age of 49.
Born and raised in Louisbourg, he was the son of the late Alexander and Catherine ‘Katie’ (Browner) Burke.
Myles will be deeply missed and forever remembered by his wife of 27 years, Jayne; his daughters, Nicole and Janine, at home; brothers, Charles (Janet), Cole Harbour, and Michael (Eileen), Louisbourg; sister, Cathie (Donald) MacLeod, Catalone; mother-in-law, Maria Morrison, Sydney; sisters-in-law, Charlene (Wally) Hines and Marilyn (Joe) Walzak, both of Sydney; many nieces and nephews; and countless friends.
Myles was a man of passion, integrity, loyalty and generosity. He was an inspiration to many and led by example, always giving the best to his family, friends, colleagues and community. A visionary, Myles believed that anything was possible; he faced every challenge as an opportunity and always had a positive attitude. Myles never forgot a name or a person and had a way of making everyone he met or knew feel special. He had respect for people in all walks of life and made time for everybody. He was a proud member of the Cursillo movement, guided by a strong sense of faith.
Myles was appointed chief of the Cape Breton Regional Police Service in February 2009. He began his policing career with the New Glasgow Police Department in 1980, before moving to the Calgary Police Service and then back to the Sydney Police in 1982, where he served until amalgamation in 1995, at which time he joined the CBRPS. Through his 31 years of policing, he was involved in all aspects of the service — from foot patrol and community policing, to drug enforcement and homicide investigations — moving his way through the ranks with enthusiasm and professionalism.
A graduate of the Atlantic Police Academy and the Calgary Police Training Academy, Chief Burke also held a bachelor of arts in community studies from the University College of Cape Breton and a certificate in criminal justice education from the University of Virginia. He was a graduate of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Va., from where he also obtained a certificate in law enforcement executive development. Chief Burke completed numerous additional professional development courses at the Atlantic Police Academy and Canadian Police College.
Chief Burke was well-known and respected throughout the policing community; he served as a member of the executive for the Nova Scotia Chiefs of Police Association and represented Nova Scotia on the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police. He was also a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the Cape Breton University Alumni Association, the Canadian Criminal Justice Association, the FBI National Academy Associates and the FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Association. He was a member of the Order of Merit for Police Services in Canada.
He was a recipient of the Police Exemplary Service Medal (30 years), Nova Scotia Police Long Service Medal (25 years) FBI National Academy Bar
His commitment to the community was evident through his many years of volunteerism with numerous organizations, including: the Cape Breton YMCA, Talbot House, YMCA Canada, United Way of Cape Breton, Community Partnership on Drug Abuse, and the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation.
Chief Burke was respected and admired by many — across the local community, the province, the country and internationally — who will forever be impacted by his honorable legacy.
Visitation will be held at the Membertou Trade and Convention Centre, Wednesday, April 13, 2011, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Fatima Church, Kings Road, Sydney River, 11 a.m., Thursday, April 14, 2011. Interment will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
