Maxine H. (Whalen, Mason) Richardson

RICHARDSON, Maxine H. (Whalen, Mason) - Age 87, Hilden, passed away peacefully in the early morning of June 4, 2017, at the Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Born August 7, 1929, in Centreville, Kings County, NS, she was the eldest daughter of the late Arthur Whalen and Evelyn (Kynock) Walton. In her younger years, Gram Mason enjoyed working and making lifelong friends at Zeller’s County Fair in Truro, and at the Homestead Lodge in Vegreville, Alberta. When she returned “home to Nova Scotia”, she was able to enjoy quality time tending to her grandchildren and her rose bushes. Gram Mason was known for being feisty and tenacious, and delighted in a lively debate over coffee about which was the better NHL team. She loved to do crosswords and watch old movies on TCM while knitting many, many, MANY pairs of everyone's favorite slippers! Finding a priceless treasure at a yard sale or a good buy at a “new to you” store was a successful day of shopping for Gram Mason! She was known around town for her Elvis Presley license plate and her precious Boston Terrier guard dog. She loved collecting cookbooks and was a wonderful cook; her homemade bread was second only to her mother's, Gram Walton, and no one will ever make a better chocolate mayonnaise cake. She is survived by son, Fred (Deborah) Mason, Bible Hill; her loving grandchildren, Michelle and Scott Mason, Vancouver, BC; Allison (Everton) Thompson, New York; Adam (Paula) Mason, Nanaimo, BC; and Mitchell Mason, Bible Hill. Also surviving are her sister Marjorie McCabe, Truro; her cousin Harley (Honey) Kynock, Halifax; and daughter-in-law Tracy Mason, Miramichi, NB. Her great-granddaughter, Zeniyah Thompson, was her “Bella” and brought great joy to her these last two years. She was predeceased by her sons, Larry and Roderick Mason; sister, Lois Spencer; and brother, Leonard Whalen. No visitation or service by request. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society,or to a charity of choice. Thank you to the “guys and gals” from VON Home Care, and to all her care team at the hospital who made her comfortable. A special thank you to all the special neighbours and wonderful friends who helped Gram Mason remain in her home for as long as possible. Arrangements entrusted to Colchester Community Funeral Home, Truro where on-line condolences may be made at: www.ColchesterCommunity.com
