It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Daniel Lawrence Campbell, 90, of Ohio, Antigonish County, NS. Lawrence passed away peacefully with his family by his side on July 18, 2017 at St. Martha’s Regional Hospital in Antigonish, NS. Lawrence was born on July 5, 1927 in Sydney, NS and was the youngest child born to the late William B. and Delphine (Michel) Campbell. Lawrence was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
After a short service with the Canadian Army during World War 2, Lawrence was trained as a Machinist/Millwright and belonged to the Millwrights Union 1178. In this capacity, he worked at LH Cann Marine Repair in Louisbourg, NS, Pushie’s Machine Shop and Sydney Engineering and Dry Dock in Sydney, NS. After moving to Antigonish, NS in 1951, he worked at Mike Campbell’s Machine Shop in Antigonish and later at Trenton Industries in New Glasgow, NS and several other sites on construction shut downs including NS Power in Port Hawkesbury, NS, the Heavy Water Plants in Glace Bay and Port Hawkesbury, NS, Nova Scotia Pulp and Paper Company in Abercrombie and Port Hawkesbury, NS and Imperial Oil in Dartmouth, NS.
Following his retirement, Lawrence became very involved in the Scottish culture accompanying his youngest children, Sheila and Michael to many Bagpipe competitions and performances around the Maritimes. In 1987, Lawrence began making Bagpipes from nylon which, at the time, was very innovative. His son Michael is still playing the first set he ever made and has won numerous awards playing these Pipes.
Lawrence is survived by daughters, Hughena Simms, Florida, USA, Arlene (Jake) Johnstone, New Glasgow, NS, Nancy Smith, New Glasgow, NS, Rita (Tony) MacDonald, Antigonish, NS and Sheila (Vernon) Best, Loon Lake, NS.; by sons, Francis ‘Frankie’ (Trish), Oshawa, ON, Larry (Darlene), Havre Boucher, Antigonish County, NS, Garry (Margie), Antigonish, NS and Michael (Heather), Sydney, NS, as well as his many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents, Lawrence was predeceased by sisters, Gertrude, Sadie, Sr. Mathilda (CND) and Rita; brothers, Neil, William ‘Sketch’, George ‘Jiggs’, James ‘Spider’, Francis ‘Cottie’ and Leo. Lawrence was also predeceased by his wife, Shirley (Dunbar); daughters, Christine ‘Chrissy’ and Shirley, as well as granddaughter, Melissa.
Visitation for Lawrence Campbell will be held a C.L. Curry Funeral Home, 135 College St., Antigonish, NS on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9. Funeral Mass will take place on Saturday at 11 a.m. in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in St. Joseph’s, Antigonish County, NS. Interment will take place in the parish cemetery immediately following the Mass.
