KENNIE, Donald Herbert - 79, of Gaspereau, Kings County, passed away Wednesday, April 13, 2011 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born at home in Gaspereau, he was a son of the late Chesley and Madeline (Davis) Kennie. He began his education in the two-room school house in Gaspereau and then attended Horton Academy, Wolfville, where he was very active in the hockey program. Upon graduation, he returned to the family farm as the sixth generation, where together with his father, he started a registered holstein herd, later incorporating as Kennvale Farms Ltd. Don was a great caretaker of the land and enjoyed the labour associated with the changing seasons, remaining involved in the farm until the time of his death. He was active in his community, church and farm organizations. Don is survived by his wife, the former June Anderson; children, Valerie (Cameron), Port Williams; Peter (Ellen), Gaspereau; Thomas (Susan), Cambridge; Gerry (Kim), New Minas and Joseph (Kathy), Gaspereau; two brothers, Darrell (Marie), Halifax and Bryan (Gena), Gaspereau; sister-in-law, Donna Kennie, New Minas. Papa will also be affectionately missed by his grandchildren, Sarah, Anna, Jaclyn (Nick) Bentley, Allison, Madeline, Spencer, Parker, Laura, Jordan, Chad, Donald Stuart, Sophia, Olivia and Nathan; several brothers and sisters-in-law; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, George and Morris “Moe”. Visitation was held from 7-9 p.m. Friday, April 15, 2011 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. The funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, April 16, 2011 in the Gaspereau Baptist Church, Reverend Mark Shaw officiating. Burial took place in the Gaspereau Cemetery. A reception followed in the Gaspereau Community Centre. Family flowers only, by request. Donations in memory may be made to the Valley Cardiac Rehab Society or the Gaspereau Baptist Church.
