Phyllis Elizabeth Marguerite (MacNaughton) Phelan

PHELAN (MacNaughton), Phyllis Elizabeth Marguerite - 83, Brookside, Colchester County, passed away peacefully Thursday, August 10, 2017, at Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro, surrounded by her loving family. Born in New Glasgow, she was the only daughter of the late Peter and Winnifred (Hayman) MacNaughton. Phyllis was a 35 year professionally dedicated educator throughout many Nova Scotia counties who started in a one room rural schoolhouse, after graduating from Nova Scotia Teachers College in Truro. Her teaching specialities included learning disabilities and special needs children. She had a passion for “fresh from her garden” vegetables, playing piano, singing and loved Gospel music in particular. She was an active member of many Nova Scotia Women's Christian Associations and also singing in many church choirs. Upon retirement, she and Brian spent many happy winters in Zephyrhills, Florida, with their musical friends. A devoted and loving wife of 59 years, she was predeceased by her loving husband, Brian. A dedicated and loving mother, she is survived by her children, Patrick, Truro; Brian (Cathy), Beaver Bank; Ann (Eric) Stewart, Lower Sackville; Mark (Deanna), Truro; grandchildren, Carl (Jen) Phelan, Christina Rankin (Tyson), Megan Phelan (fiancé, Mark), Christopher (Lisa) Phelan, Ben Stewart, Jonathan Phelan; step grandchildren, Shelley Ruggles, Trish Ruggles, Alex Stewart; several great grandchildren. Along with her parents, she was predeceased by her brothers, Stewart (May) MacNaughton and Douglas (Margaret) MacNaughton. Very special thanks to personal care giver, Susan Scott, and her entire medical team. Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall – Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro, where Phyllis’ family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m., Monday, August 14, 2017, and funeral service 2 p.m., Tuesday, August 15, 2017, Reverend Valerie Kingsbury officiating. Reception will follow. Private family interment will be held in Crossroads Cemetery, Valley, to reunite “The Queen Bee” with her beloved husband, Brian. In lieu of flowers, donations in Phyllis’ memory to VON, Palliative Care Unit (CEHHC), Canadian Red Cross or The Salvation Army are welcomed.
