With profound sadness, but with uplifted spirits of a most beautiful life lived, we regret to announce the peaceful passing of our dear mom, grandmother and great-grandmother, Doris Catherine (Harrison) McCormick, age 84, on Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2009, after a brief illness, surrounded by her loving family and the comfort and wishes from those unable to be present.
Born in Birmingham, England, Mom was a war bride to her loving husband, our late father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Cpl. Paul McCormick. After their marriage in England in 1945, they made their way to Sydney, Cape Breton, where they began their family.
Survived by Dennis Weston, Boisdale; sister, Joan White, England; son, Michael (Linda) McCormick, Moncton; daughters, Paula (Pat) Lynch, Beaver Cove, Joan (Butch) Boutilier, Prime Brook, Theresa Donnison, Sydney, Leona (Gordie) Akers, Victoria, B.C., Helen (Dennis) MacSween, Beaver Cove, and Jacqueline (John) VanderHeiden, Victoria, B.C. Also survived by 14 grandchildren, Gregory McCormick, Devin, Meghan and Brianne Lynch, Dan and Jen Boutilier, Tammy, Kelly and Jimmy Donnison, Sarah, Hannah and Calum MacSween, Julia and Jordan VanderHeiden; three great-grandchildren, Sophia, Jackson and Connor.
Loyal to the friends she made, especially while working at the Braemore Home, she was a very special person to everyone she met and so much more to her immediate and extended family, including nieces and nephews who will miss her dearly. Mom enjoyed the simple pleasures in life, especially working in her beautiful English garden. We will always remember her there.
A very heartfelt thank you to the Palliative Care Service, the VON and to her special caregivers, Mary, Margaret and Julie, who cared for our mom in a most dignified and gentle manner. Our personal thanks to Marie MacDonald of New Dawn.
Funeral arrangements entrusted to Sydney Memorial Chapel. At mom’s request, a private service will be held.
No flowers by request of the family. Memorials may be made to the Cape Breton Palliative Care Society.
A precious one from us is gone,
A voice we loved is stilled.
A place is vacant in our home,
Which never can be filled.
“Farewell our English roseâ€
