COATES, Philip – Passed peacefully away at the Dr. Hugh Twomey Health Care Centre on Oct 24, 2008, Philip Coates of Botwood. He was 89 years of age. Mr. Coates retired from Abitibi Price in 1983 and was a veteran of the Royal Air Force, an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #5 and a Sub-Lieutenant for the Botwood Sea Cadets. Predeceased by parents Thomas and Alice Maude; brothers: George, James, Harry, Lewis; sisters: Mildred Penney, Daisy LaPierre; grandchildren: Meghan & Andrew Ryan. Left to mourn are his wife Nellie V.; son Ernest, Elmira, ON; daughters: Phyllis Coates (Terry Wells), Botwood, NL, Jennette Coates (Michael Ryan), Calgary, AB. Also leaving to mourn sisters: Ada Jewer, Hazel Rowe, Florence Vanderburg and brother Calvin; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild and a large circle of other relatives and friends. Rev. David Coffin, Rev. Calvin Coates and Rev. Joan Antle conducted the funeral service at St. James Anglican Church, Botwood on Monday, Oct. 27, 2008. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Hoskins Funeral Home, Botwood. Pallbearers were Ernest Coates, Terry Wells, Michael Ryan, Owen Coates. Honorary pallbearer was John Aitken.
