Sr. Mary Grace MacDonald, 94, a Sister of Saint Martha of Antigonish, died at Bethany, the Motherhouse, on Thursday, Aug. 6, 2009.
Born in Soldiers’ Cove, Richmond County, N.S., she was the daughter of the late Daniel Hugh and Mary (Gillis) MacDonald.
Sr. Mary Grace entered the Sisters of Saint Martha on Sept. 8, 1935, pronounced her first vows on July 16, 1937, and her perpetual profession of vows on July 22, 1940. She served the congregation in the pioneering field of homemaking in the dietary departments of several of the congregation’s institutes. In Antigonish she ministered at Bethany, St. Francis Xavier University, at the Bishop’s Residence and St. Martha’s Hospital; in Cape Breton at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Glace Bay, Teachers’ Residence in Eskasoni, and at New Waterford Consolidated Hospital in New Waterford. In Western Canada, Sr. Grace served as dietary supervisor at St. Michael’s Hospital in Lethbridge, Alta., St. Peter’s Hospital in Melville, Sask., and in Ontario at St. Pius X High School/Seminary, Ottawa.
Sr. Mary Grace returned to Bethany in September of 1972 and continued in service to the sisters who lived there. Due to failing health she had to discontinue active service and moved into Bethany’s Extended Care in 2005.
Sr. Mary Grace was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She was predeceased by eight brother, Hugh, Alex, Anthony, Donald F., James, John F., Joseph and Michael, and by one sister, Mary MacNeil. Two family members died in infancy, Joseph and Mary. Several nieces and nephews survive Sr. Grace.
The remains will be resting at Bethany, the motherhouse, beginning Friday, Aug. 7, 2009, at 1:15 p.m., where a Celebration of Vigil will be held that same evening at 7:30 p.m. Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, Aug. 8, 2009, at 2 p.m. in Bethany Chapel.
