MUNRO, James William L/Col. (Ret'd), C.D. - 88, passed away peacefully at home on April, 17, 2011. Born in Revelstoke, B.C. in 1923 he was the son of the late Jacob Hart (Cape Breton, NS) and Ethel Munro(Penticton, BC). He joined the RCAF in 1942 and was Commissioned and received his Wings in 1943. He served as a Flying Instructor during W.W.II and served in the West Indies in Maritime Patrol duties until the end of the war. He then had a brief career in the family fur business, Munro Furs, while also attending UBC. In 1952 he rejoined the RCAF and his dedicated military career included the following: Flying Instructor, Claresholm AB; All Weather Fighter Pilot 409 Sqn., Comox, BC; Air Defense Command Flight Safety Officer, St. Hubert, PQ; Pilot 405 Maritime Patrol Sqn., Greenwood, NS; Crew Captain 404 Maritime Patrol Sqn., Greenwood, NS; Commanding Officer Argus Conversion Unit, Greenwood, NS; Exchange Officer, Fleet Air Wings Pacific, Moffatt Field, CA (Anti-Submarine Warfare Training Officer); Senior Staff Officer Programs, Maritime Command Headquarters, Halifax, NS; Base Administration Officer, CFB Greenwood, NS. Jim’s distinguished career with the RCAF was celebrated at his retirement in January 1974 where he received the Canadian Forces Decoration. After retirement he established his own Real Estate Company, Jim Munro Real Estate, and eventually became a Life Member and Past President of the Annapolis Valley Real Estate Association and also served as the Director of the NS Real Estate Association. Jim was always very active in his community with some of his positions being: Past Chairman of the Board, Western Kings Memorial Hospital; Past President, Board of Management, VON Kings Branch; Past President, Parish Council, St. Anthony’s Church, Berwick; Past President, Parish Council St. Joseph’s Church, Kentville and Federal Liberal Candidate for Kings-Hants riding. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved camping, canoeing, hiking and photography and for many years Jim and Rita-May raised golden retrievers. His true passions, however, were his wife and family. He is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Rita-May (McEwen); 10 children including sons: James Munro (Jane), Embrun, ON; Peter Munro (Marlene), Kimberley, BC; John Munro, Dartmouth, NS; Paul Munro (Judi), Penticton, BC; daughters: Catherine (Dr. Bill) MacGillivray, Miramichi, NB; Mary-Pat (Dale) Hawley, Oxford, NS; Marita (Don) Comeau, Calgary, AB; Susan (Lewis) MacKinnon, Sackville, NS; Carolyn (Brian) Woodward, Dover, NH, USA and Laura (George) Carmichael, Sackville, NS; sisters-in-law, Margot Munro and Marie McEwen; devoted niece Jan Thompson; niece Elizabeth Nelson; and many other nieces and nephews. Jim was predeceased by his parents; his brother Gil and sister Belva; granddaughter, Brianne and infant grandsons Jimmy and Michael. He was the beloved and most respected Grandpa to 40 grandchildren and 44 great-grandchildren. His love, wisdom and devotion to his family will be forever remembered. Visitation was held from 7-9 p.m., Wednesday, April 20, 2011 with prayers held at 8:00 p.m. both in the White Family Funeral Home, 100 Cornwallis St., Kentville. Funeral mass was held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, April 21, 2011 in St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Belcher St., Kentville, officiated by Fr. Craig Christianson. Burial took place in the Holy Cross Cemetery, Kentville. A reception followed in St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church Hall. Donations may be made to the NS Heart and Stroke Foundation.
