July 7, 1911 – April 7, 2011
Our sweet mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother went home to be with her Lord and Savior Thursday, April 7th, 2011. Exactly three months short of her 100th birthday. She was born July 7th, 1911 in Clarke’s Beach, Newfoundland, to John and Flora Butler. She was an amazing woman and was loved by everyone that knew her. She is survived by five of her six children, Florence Desaulniers (Vinnie), Lillian Meeds (Wayne), Lorna Moore, Sidney Garland (Brenda), Calvin Garland (Barbara), 17 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and 23 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her daughter Marge Taylor (Don). She is also survived by three of her sisters, Elsie Moore, Rita Morgan, and Phyllis Belbin.
Emmie and John were married 61 years before his death in 1989. They spent many of their early years in Montreal where they raised their six children and later moved to California. They returned to Newfoundland to enjoy their retirement years back in 1976, but would frequently make trips to California to spend their winters. The doors to their home were always open. Rarely was there a night that passed that didn’t involve a knock at the door and many cups of tea. After John passed away she continued to travel to and from California to spend time with family and loved ones.
“Nanny” as she was affectionately known to her friends and family will be sadly missed by everyone. She was a devoted wife as well as a loving and caring mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was always ready and willing to provide guidance and assistance to everyone. She will be remembered by many as a hard worker, caregiver, and a person who had a deep concern for the needs of others.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on May 7th at the Pentecostal Church in Clarke’s Beach.
