JAKOB ULRICH KNAUS

JAKOB ULRICH KNAUS

May 13, 1927 - September 25, 2017
At the age of 90 Jakob’s very great heart has stopped. He was born and grew up in the city of St. Gallen in Switzerland and as a teen experienced his formative years during wartime in Europe with shortages of food and other resources. Nonetheless he was a model school athlete and when he finished his commercial training he decided to leave and see the world. He emigrated to Sri Lanka and worked for a Swiss trading company for over 30 years and such was his discipline and dedication that he rose from factory assistant eventually to be the managing director of the agency. During these years he married his school time love Marlis and his three children were born. In his free time he found a passion for golfing. Before retiring Marlis and Jakob travelled all continents of the world and visited many friends. But it was the Sunshine Coast they immediately fell in love with at sight and bought a house in Wilson Creek. They eventually immigrated to Canada in 1984, settled here and became Canadian citizens. Jakob’s passion was golfing but he was never an idle person: he was a member of the Chamber of Commerce, a long time member of the School Board and was very active with the B.C. Ferries Advisory Committee for many years. He was always interested in world and local affairs as well as the well-being of his children and grandchildren abroad and enjoyed their frequent visits from Switzerland. His health only started failing last Autumn but he managed to live under care at home until this August. He eventually passed away peacefully at the hospice in Shorncliffe. Jakob will be remembered and missed as a husband, father, grandfather and very active member of the community. He is survived by his wife Marlis, his daughter Sylvia, and sons Patrick and Juerg and many grandchildren, who all remember him lovingly as a very dear and most generous role model. A memorial service will be held on Friday, December 8 at 11.00 am at Devlin Funeral Home in Gibsons.
