Betty Hawthorne passed away peacefully at Royal Inland Hospital on April 29, 2011 at the age of 83. She will be remembered as a cheerful, pragmatic person with tremendous emotional strength and a great sense of humour.

Betty is survived by her brother Jack McCrae, her son Peter Tayrn Hawthorne, daughters Susan Turner and Georgia (Allan) Ross, grandsons Jarrett Turner and James (Kathleen) Turner and great grandson, Josh Marback. Betty's other close family members include the Okamoto family (Bob, Dawn and Kristal) and her sisters-in-law Isabelle (Chuck) Weishaupt and Eleanor (Alan) McLeod.

Betty lived in Vancouver for many years. She received recognition from the City of Vancouver for 20 years of dedicated volunteer work with such groups as the Pacific Association for Autistic Children and the Vancouver Special Olympics.

Since relocating to Kamloops in 1994, Betty volunteered for the Arthritis Society, Royal Inland Hospital Thrift Store and Desert Gardens Seniors Centre.

Betty's family would like to thank the nurses from the Interior Health Home and Community Care Program, and the wonderful home support workers from High Country Health Care. Your support was invaluable in allowing Betty to remain in her own home.

A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, May 5, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. in the Schoening Funeral Chapel with Pastor Terry Sauder officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the SPCA, 1211 - 8th Street, Kamloops, BC V2B 2Y3 in memory of Betty would be appreciated.
