On Wednesday, May 4, 2011, Jack passed away peacefully at Taigh Na Mara, Glace Bay, with family at his side.
Born June 18, 1917, at Horne’s Road, Mira, Jack was the son of the late John and Harriet (Spencer) Miller.
In his early years, he enjoyed hiking, swimming, and boating on the Mira River. During the Second World War, he was a member of the RCAF. For two years, he flew maintenance missions, testing aircraft artillery out of Jarvis, Ont. Upon discharge from the services, he spent a short time studying journalism in Moncton, N.B. When he returned to Sydney, he worked for a short time surveying local roads before a 35 year career as a postal clerk with Canada Post. Throughout his working years, he enjoyed the summer months camping with his family, touring the Maritimes and Maine. A highlight of his life was a special trip to California, Nevada and Arizona where he watched the sunrise over the grand canyon, with his family and friends.
Jack is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 57 years, Gladys (Simms); daughter, Barbara; son, Glenn (Diane) and his two deeply cherished Shelties, Brandi and Brady. He is also survived by his nieces, Bonnie (Carlos) Cazorla, Penticton, B.C., Jean (Brian) Anderson, Bedford, N.S. and Debbie Miller, Calgary, Alta.; nephews, John (Theresa), Sydney and Keith, Tumber Ridge, B.C.
Besides his parents, Jack was predeceased by his brothers, Harvey, Albert and Wallace and two cherished dogs, Chimo and Kayla, whom he loved dearly.
There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held at the Church of Christ the King on Saturday 11 a.m., with Rev. Laura McCue officiating. A private family interment will take place at a later date. Following the service, a reception will be held in the church hall.
We, the family, would like to thank the staff of the DVA wing at Taigh Na Mara for all the loving care given to Jack during his three years living there. He told us many times how lucky he was to be there and to be shown such kindness and care. We also give thanks to the doctors and nurses at the CBRH, Renal Dialysis Unit for their kind and loving care during Jack’s illness.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Kidney Foundation of Nova Scotia, the Lung Association of Nova Scotia or a charity of one’s choice.
Condolences may be sent to the family at www.sydneymemorialchapel.ca.
