Margaret Evlyn Eagles

Margaret Evlyn Eagles

EAGLES, MARGARET EVLYN – 78, of Wolfville and Parrsboro. It is with sad hearts that we announce the passing of Margaret Evlyn Eagles on Friday, May 6, 2011 at the South Cumberland Community Care Centre, Parrsboro. However, “Ev” truly left us years ago, through the devastating effects of Alzheimer’s. Born in Saint John, New Brunswick to Thomas and Elsie (Rankin) Todd, she was a graduate of the New Brunswick Teacher’s College, the University of New Brunswick and Acadia University. She began her career teaching in many small communities throughout New Brunswick, her most favourite class being grade two. She met her beloved husband, Edward Alan Eagles (a fellow teacher) on her first day teaching high school in Oromocto, NB. They married in 1961 and a few years later moved to Wolfville, Nova Scotia; where Ed had accepted a teaching position in the English Department at Acadia University. The Eagles’ house on Westwood Avenue was always a welcoming spot, Ev was always ready with a cup of tea or a hot meal for whomever might need it. Ev was a free spirit, and a true romantic; often commenting that she was “born in the wrong century”. She loved nature and was in her element with her “flowees and birdies” whether on the Acadia dykes, at Scots Bay or on the Haworth Moors in England. Ev was a wonderful wife and much loved Mom. Throughout the 80’s Ev indulged in her love of learning and began taking courses at the Acadia Divinity College. In 1994, Ed and their only daughter, Amanda proudly watched as Ev received her Master of Arts in Theology from Acadia. Unfortunately, Ev was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 1998, and began her slow decline. In 2006, in poor health, Ev moved with Ed to Amherst to be closer to their daughter. Ev was pre-deceased by her husband, Ed in 2010; brother George Todd; and sisters Marie Parkin and Miriam Paul. Ev has left behind, her cherished daughter, Amanda Allaby, son-in-law Dave, and her adored grandchildren Julia and Matthew (Amherst, NS) – who best remember Grammy and her Smarties. Ev also leaves behind her younger brother David (Carolyn) Todd (Edmonton, AB) and many nieces and nephews. There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held at the Acadia University Chapel on Wednesday, May 11th at 2pm. Donations in memory of Ev can be made to the Chaplaincy Endowment Fund - Acadia University, the South Cumberland Community Care Centre Adult Dare Care Program, or to the Alzheimer’s Society of Nova Scotia. Arrangements entrusted to Smith’s Funeral Home, Parrsboro. Online condolences at www.smithsfuneralhome.com
