Mary Anne (Annie) Goodyear
NEW GLASGOW – Annie Goodyear, 94, passed away peacefully May 5, 2011 at the Maritime Oddfellows Home in Pictou.
Annie was born Dorothy Richardson in Halifax on January 23, 1917 and was orphaned during the Halifax Explosion on December 6, 1917. Soon after she was adopted by Charles and Annie Tye of Little Harbour, Pictou County. Later Annie and her family moved to MacDonald Street, New Glasgow, where she lived most of her life. In 1941 Annie married Joe Goodyear, a trainman with the CNR.
Annie was predeceased by her loving husband Joe Goodyear in 1983 and two brothers, Orville and Palmer Tye.
She is survived by her four children: Joe Jr., Doug (Marg), Don (Pat), Sharon, seven grandchildren, and many foster children. Annie is also survived by many nieces and nephews who were very special to her.
Annie lived a very full life which included holding many offices such as President of the Past Chief’s Club and a Past Most Excellent Chief of Jubilee Temple #5 Pythian Sisters, St. John Ambulance Combined Brigade, Women’s Christian Temperance Union and the Golden Link #4 Rebekah Lodge. Annie was Past-President of the Ladies Auxiliary to Branch 34 Royal Canadian Legion, a member of the Star of the East Lodge, Stellarton who are the Ladies Auxiliary to the BRT (Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen).
She was a member of Trinity United Church, and UCW and taught Sunday School in the Primary Department for a number of years.
Annie worked at the Norfolk Hotel, Zellers, the V-Filling Station, and more than 25 years at the Peter Pan Motel as a waitress and cook where she made her famous butterscotch pies. Her hobbies included knitting, sewing, and gardening.
Annie will always be remembered for her caring, generosity, and beautiful smile. She was a very special woman who tried to make a difference in the lives of many people. Annie was totally giving of herself to anyone who needed help regardless of her own circumstances. Her door was always open to anyone who wanted to come in and have a cup of tea or a place to stay.
Her remains will rest at the Angus Funeral Home, New Glasgow with visitation from 7-9 p.m. Sunday, May 8, 3-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Monday, May 9, 2011. Funeral will be held at Trinity United Church, Temperance Street, New Glasgow at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 10, 2011. A reception will take place in the church hall immediately following the funeral service. Burial will take place in Heatherdale Memorial Gardens following the reception.
