It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear brother, uncle and brother-in-law, Hugh James MacKenzie, on Friday, Aug. 14, 2009. He died peacefully at home after a brief battle with cancer.
Born in New Waterford, he was the son of the late Neil Charles and Catherine Florence (MacNeil) MacKenzie.
Hugh was a coal miner who worked in both Lingan and Phalen collieries. He served in the Royal Canadian Navy and also worked at Anaconda Brass in Toronto. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 15, New Waterford, N.S. Hugh was beloved by his family and a cherished friend to many. His mighty glorious laugh, gentle manner and generous spirit inspired and delighted all who knew him. He had a masterful ability to bring people together and inspire lasting friendship. Joan Wells of Glace Bay was a friend Hugh loved especially well.
Hugh is survived by his brothers, Alex, New Waterford, Angus (Mary), Etobicoke, Ont., Neil (Charlotte), River Ryan, Raymond (Eunice), Whale Cove, N.S., Francis (Margaret), New Waterford; sisters, Elizabeth MacKay, New Waterford, Cecilia MacNeil, Boston, Rita, New Waterford, and Christina (Doug) Riley, Bridgewater, Mass.; several nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, all of whom will hold their treasured uncle in their hearts forever.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, and a sister, all in infancy, brothers-in-law, Raymond MacNeil and James MacKay and sister-in-law, Leona MacKenzie.
Visitation will take place at McLellan Brothers Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford, 862-7500, on Wednesday, Aug. 19 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass to celebrate Hugh’s life will be held Thursday, Aug. 20 at 10 a.m. in the Parish of St. Leonard’s/St. Agnes Church with Fr. Paul MacNeil officiating. A luncheon will follow in the parish hall, all are invited to attend.
In lieu of flowers, donations honouring Hugh’s life may be made to any local food bank.

Hugh’s family thanks the nurses and doctors of the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital, the Cape Breton Cancer Centre and the Palliative Care Unit, the staff of the VON and the New Waterford Homecare for their care and support.
