It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Mansel Earl Thurbide, 80, of Florence, on Saturday, Aug. 15, 2009, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney.
Born Feb. 13, 1929, he was the son of the late Percy and Alice (Stephens) Thurbide.
He was a member of Wilson United Church, Florence, and donated much of his time to his community where he was a firefighter for 26 years. He was employed as a coal miner, retiring after 32 years of service. Through the years, Mansel and his great love, his wife Ann, always enjoyed going to dances together. He also loved to play cards and travel. In his later years, Mansel enjoyed listening to music, socializing and visits with his family.
He is survived by his daughter, Creyton (Murray Evans), Sydney Mines; proud grandfather to Melinda (Allan Melanson), Calgary; Laura Evans, Halifax; great-grandfather to Zoe Melanson; also survived by sisters, Elva and Karen, both of Ontario.
Mansel was predeceased by his wife, the former Ann Arsenault, sister, Lorna, brothers, Elwood, Glen and Weldie.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday, Aug. 19 at 11 a.m. at Wilson United Church, Florence, with Rev. Dave Luker officiating. Burial in Brookside Cemetery, Sydney Mines.
Donations may be made to the Florence fire hall.
