Russell Mansfield, 92, a former longtime resident of Whitney Pier, was called to his heavenly home Saturday, May 7, 2011, at the Glace Bay Hospital, with his loving daughters and a great caretaker by his side.
Born in Newfoundland, he was the son of the late Archibald and Susan (Travis) Mansfield.
Serving overseas in Italy with the Cape Breton Highlanders during the Second World War, Russell was a proud life member of the Royal Canadian Legion branch 128, Whitney Pier, and Salvation Army, Sydney.
He enjoyed 31 years of retirement, after leaving the coke ovens department at Sydney Steel.
He is survived by his daughters, Phyllis (Wayne) Bennett, Sydney, Rosie (Emilien) Theriault, Halifax, Bonnitta (Frank) Corbett, Sydney, Judy (Wes) Nichols, Sydney, and Kathy Hindy, Newfoundland; sister, Dorothy Downey; brother, Heber; 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents, Russell was predeceased by his wife, Freda, sister, Annie and brothers, Chess and George.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, May 11 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Sydney Memorial Chapel. Funeral service will take place Thursday, 11 a.m. at the Salvation Army Sydney Community Church with Capt. Vega officiating. Interment in Eastmount Cemetery, followed by a reception at the Pier legion.
