It is with sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of James Edward ‘Dutchie’ Hogan, 62, of Scotchtown on Monday, May 9, 2011, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in New Waterford, he was a son of the late Jerry and Regina (Vansfield) Hogan.
Dutchie was a member of the Parish Church of St. Leonard, New Waterford, and was a miner at Lingan Colliery for 24 years until his retirement. In earlier years, Dutchie enjoyed playing darts at the Army, Navy, Airforce. He was considered a great outdoorsman who loved to hunt, fish and travel through the woods on his four-wheeler. Music also played a large role in his life and it was evident when he was near; you could always hear him singing a tune in the background.
Dutchie had an aura about him and was considered the life of the party when he arrived. He was truly most passionate about his family and would include them in his outdoor adventures whenever possible. He loved his grandchildren, who referred to him as Papa, and enjoyed taking them on hikes, trips to Mira, and occasionally on the back of his four-wheeler trailer for drives around the yard. A great many memories were made and he will never be forgotten.
Surviving are his wife, Donna (Aucoin), Scotchtown; daughter, Laurie Hogan; sons, Ronnie (Tanya) Hogan and Jamie (Patsy) Hogan, all of New Waterford; brother, Michael Hogan, Albert Bridge; sisters, Helen Totten, New Waterford, Leona (Real) Lapointe, Montreal; eight grandchildren, Rebecca, Matthew, Jessica, Kaity, J.J., Jeffrey, Victoria, Landen.
Besides his parents, Dutchie was predeceased by brothers Jerry, Joseph and Daniel, sisters, Mary and Linda.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral mass will be celebrated Wednesday, May 11, at 10 a.m. in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue, with Fr. Anthony Marsh officiating. A luncheon will follow at St. Leonard’s Parish hall, Convent Street, New Waterford.
Donations in his memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
