Ebby Gardiner
Lieu de naissance : Sydney Mines, Nouvelle Ecosse, Canada
Date de naissance : 30 septembre 1935
Lieu de décès : Sydney Mines, Nouvelle Ecosse, Canada
Date de décès : 9 mai 2011
The family of Ebby Gardiner regrets to announce his passing on May 9, 2011, at the An Cala palliative care unit after an 11-year battle with cancer; a battle he fought with courage and dignity.
Born in Sydney Mines, Sept. 30, 1935, he was the son of the late George and Sarah (Gouthro) Gardiner.
Ebby started his working days as a coal miner and draegerman at the Princess Colliery in Sydney Mines. He later went on to become a building inspector, councillor and deputy mayor of the Town of Sydney Mines. While in council, Ebby served on many boards and commissions. As a businessman, he owned and operated the Seabreeze Catering Mobile Canteens and presently Ebbie’s Restaurant.
Ebbie’s hobbies and interests were vast. As a young man, he played baseball with the Sydney Mines Olands in 1965 and with the Al LeBlanc Aluminum Cubs in 1977. His love of baseball was evident in the many ‘baseball trips’ that he took to Toronto, Boston, Chicago and Detroit to see Major League teams play, and of course his joy and sometimes frustration watching the Blue Jays. His interest in horse racing took him to many tracks across Canada and the United States, but he most enjoyed his Saturday afternoons spent at the Northside Downs with Frankie, Paddy and the boys, and Old Home Week in P.E.I.
Ebbie’s passion for fishing took him to many ponds, brooks and rivers over the years, but some of his happiest hours were spent at the ‘secret place’ with Howie, where they prided themselves on catching the ‘big one,’ some of which were on display in his restaurant.
Some of Ebbie’s happiest moments were the trips he took with Faye and a good game of pool in his pool room with whoever came by. Ebby was a kind, caring and generous man who will be missed by many who knew him, and were fortunate enough to be part of his life, but no one loved him or will miss him as much as his family.
Ebby is survived by his wife, Faye; son, Howie (Edwina); daughters, Wendy (Derrick) Burton, Debbie (Fred) Osmond; stepdaughter, Melanie (Carl) Eldridge; his four grandchildren, Shawn, Brittany and Alicia Burton, Joshua Osmond, and his two step-grandchildren, Ethan and Hannah Eldridge. He is also survived by his brothers, Mickey (Jean), Frankie, Gerald and Brian (Shirley); sisters, Betty Gordon, Lorraine Gardiner and Linda (Dan) Squires; his three furry pals, Babes, Callie and the Big “M”; several nieces and nephews of whom he was very fond.
Besides his parents, Ebby was predeceased by brothers, Andrew and Bucky, sister, Thelma Ashton and a grandson, Trevor Burton.
Visitation for Ebby Gardiner will be held Thursday, May 12 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines. A celebration of his life will take place Friday at 10 a.m. in St. Pius X Church, Main Street, Sydney Mines, with Fr. Ajit Kerketta officiating. The burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Sydney Mines.
Donations in Ebby’s memory may be made to the An Cala palliative care unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, the SPCA, or the Canadian Cancer Society.
Words of comfort may be sent to the family at jmjobesfuneralhome@ns.aliantzinc.ca.
Rest in Peace my love, the pain is gone.
Until we meet again, you will always be in my heart,
My soul and my dreams.
Faye xoxo
