New Glasgow – Marjory Westerman. We said goodbye to Marjory Elizabeth Westerman, age 87, on May 10, 2011, at Colchester Regional Hospital. She was a beloved mother, nana and great nana. She was born in Boston, Mass., USA, on December 31, 1923, to the late Louise Elizabeth (Blair) Webster and the late Alfred Ernest Winchester. She spent her early childhood and youth in Cambridge, NS. After the death of her father, Jack Webster became the only father she remembered. She spoke of him frequently. It was in Cambridge she married her former husband, the late William Westerman and, with her three sons, they moved to New Glasgow in 1954. She spent all of her adult years in New Glasgow raising her three sons while working at F.O. MacLeod, Sears, New Glasgow Printery and Steel Furnishing. After retirement, she volunteered at the Pictou County SPCA because of her love of animals. Her cats for years were her companions and they were pampered. Her caregiver Lorraine Bevis was welcomed into her family circle, allowing her more time in her own home. She loved the ocean waves, enjoyed trips to Melmerby Beach, listening to Ann Murray music and retelling childhood memories of summers at Mordon. There was always a cup of tea waiting at Nan’s for she enjoyed visits from family, especially grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her great sense of humour endeared her to all who met her. In January of 2011, she moved to Elk Court, Brookfield, where she made new friends and was loved by staff and residents alike for her friendliness, her cheerfulness and accommodating nature. She is survived by sons: Darrell John (Joyce Barak); Shortts Lake; Peter Douglas, New Glasgow; grandchildren: Marjorie (Steve) Sutherland, Alma; Shannon (Alan) Smith, New Glasgow; Bradley (Inger) Westerman, Kanata, ON; Haley Westerman, New Glasgow; 6 great grandchildren; family member Elizabeth Brooks, Dutton, ON. She was predeceased by son Billy Westerman; long-time companion Alvin Reeves; stepdaughter Joan Reeves; sister Frances Winchester; daughter-in-law Patsy Westerman; step aunts Jessie Webster and Mabelle Webster; cousin Eric Schofield. Visitation 6-8 pm Thursday in the R.H. Porter Funeral Home, New Glasgow, from where funeral service will be held at 1 pm Friday with Rev. John Tonks officiating. Burial will be in Abercrombie Cemetery. Donations in her memory may be made to Summer Street Industries or a charity of choice. Condolences at: www.rhporter.ca
