FARRER, Kenneth Miller
June 26, 1918 - August 12, 2009
Kenneth MIller Farrer, born to Artemus Belle and Mary Jane (Miller) Farrer in Nash Creek, NB, went on to a better life the morning of August 12, 2009, at 91 years of age. Ken came west with his parents as an infant. His mom and dad were on the harvest crew to Western Canada and they ended up in the Sceptre area where his father started buying land and farming. Ken's schooling started at Kathleen School District #230 which was located four miles south, two miles east and a half mile north of Sceptre on the Howes land where he attended grades one to seven, riding a horse to school everyday. He then attended grades eight to ten by correspondence and grades eleven and twelve in Sceptre. In 1937 Ken and his father had a chance to rent a 3/4 section of land at Laura, Saskatchewan for five years from Elmer Green. Laura is just west of Saskatoon and it took eight days to move equipment one way from Sceptre. Ken was part of the Sceptre Cattleman's Association in 1946 (Signal Valley Co-Op). He was secretary for 30 years, Dad loved his cows. After Terry and Ken decided not to have a cow calf operation on the farm, Dad started buying calves or yearlings to fatten up for market. He was always on the road going to cattle sales - buy - buy- buy. Another love was his coins and stamp collection which he started as a young lad (10 years old). In 1948, he and some other men in Medicine Hat started up what is now known as "Medicine Hat Coin and Stamp Club". Dad did this until his eye sight failed him 10 years ago - what a collection. From 1940 to 1948, Ken attended the U of S in Saskatoon to take agriculture, at that same time he was taking Ag-Engineering he also taught classes. Ken met Murial Patricia Smalley in Saskatoon where they were married in 1948. They have three children: Carmen (Brenda), Terence (Fran) (grandchildren, Terena (Allan Gunderson) of Fort McMurray, great granddaughter, Tiana; Jason (Amber) of Medicine Hat and Gregory of Fort McMurray), Sherri (Dave) (grandsons Elliot and Clinton). He was predeceased by his parents, Artemus in 1965 and Mary in 1977; wife, Muriel in 2005; and daughter-in-law, Angela in 1997. A graveside service was held at Hillside Cemetery on Friday, August 21, 2009, at 10:30 a.m. with Gloria Angle officiating. As an expression of sympathy donations may be made to the Canadian National Institute for the Blind #102,520 2nd Street S.E., Medicine Hat, AB T1A 0C6 or to the Salvation Army, Swift Current.
