Florence Isabel Adams, R.N., musician, Scarborough (formerly of Glace Bay, Cape Breton) died peacefully at home surrounded by her family.
Daughter of Lydia (Hull) Travis and Floyd Oliver Travis, Florence was born in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia and gained her R.N. Diploma and worked at the Glace Bay General Hospital.
She married Robert Adams in 1944 and continued studying for a life in music, achieving her Associate Diploma from Trinity College, London, England.
She built a tremendous music tradition through 31 years as music director at St. Paul's Presbyterian Church in Glace Bay where she was an inspiration to her students and her outstanding choirs. Music careers and standards were set by her dedication and example.
In Glace Bay, Florence was an activist for the community, a force of nature who worked for the good of her community. She never backed down from any challenge. She was a tireless advocate for music in Cape Breton, a member of the Community Concerts, Friends of the Savoy and the N.S. Registered Music Teachers Assn.
In Toronto, she continued her passion through her teaching, as Music Director of St. Mark's United Church in Scarborough and as a member of the Amadeus Choir.
Predeceased by her parents; her dear husband, Robert Ethan Adams; son, Ethan; sister, Ivy MacRitchie and brothers, Reynolds Travis and Dr. Douglas Travis.
She is survived by her son, Robert (Carol); daughter, Lydia; grandsons, Douglas Robert and Harvey; sister, Louise, as well as loving family and dear friends, to whom she was loyal and true.
The family wish to extend sincere thanks to Dr. Bornstein and the wonderful nursing staff of the 6th floor of Trilogy L.T.C. who were entrusted to her care. Special thanks to Maria, Sheri and her angel, Eulalee.
A service of joyous thanksgiving for Florence's life and work will be held at Metropolitan United Church, 56 Queen Street East, Toronto, with Rev. Dr. G. Malcolm Sinclair officiating, on Sunday, May 15th, at 6 p.m. with visitation at 5 p.m. in the Chancel room.
In lieu of flowers, the family would request a donation to The Amadeus Choir of Toronto, The Elmer Iseler Singers, Toronto, The Building Fund, St. Paul's Presbyterian Church, Glace Bay, N.S., The United Baptist Church in Glace Bay, or to the Nova Scotia Talent Trust.
