It is with great sadness, we announce the peaceful passing of Dan ‘Frecks’ MacDonald, of Union St. Dominion, at the Glace Bay Healthcare Hospital, on May 11, 2011.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the eldest son of the late Colin F. and Sadie (McNeil) McDonald, Union St. Dominion.
Freck’s was a Coal Miner at 16, 18, 20, 26 and 1B collieries. Injured by a mining accident, he spent 5 years in a wheelchair before returning to the mines until his retirement.
He was a devoted family man, who pledged his life to his widowed mother at an early age, to which he was true, his entire life. His faith to his religion and his church was an influence on how dedicated he was.
Frecks looked forward to visits from family and friends, for trading pit stories or giving his views on current and past events. He filled his days with a voracious appetite for reading with Cape Breton history, sports figures biographies, politics, all of which he had his own opinion. It was always a pleasure to be in his company, listening to and learning something about our fair island.
Frecks is survived by sisters Johnena, Mary Margaret ‘Maggie’; brothers Frankie (Marie), and John ‘Pinky’ and sister-in-law Betty McDonald (Joe, dec.).
Besides his parents, he was previously deceased by sisters Mary (Neilie dec.), Anne, and Elizabeth (in infancy); brothers Charlie and Joe.
He is also survived by special niece Valerie Campbell; special friends Joanne and Fred Gillis and family, Mary Anita and Allan and family, and Kim and Bobby Clarke and boys and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be in Curry's Funeral Homes at 775 Main St. Glace Bay, on Monday May 16, 2011 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
A celebration of Frecks' life, with a Christian Burial Mass, will be held at St. Eugene's Church, Commercial St. Dominion at 3 p.m., Tuesday May 17, 2011. Burial in the parish cemetery. Send condolences to jmcurry@ns.sympatico.ca.
