Born to Adam and Maggie (Lambert) Marsh in Hickman’s Harbour, Newfoundland. She moved to St. John’s, Newfoundland when she was about 18 and met her husband, Alfred Oswald who was in the military stationed at Gander. They moved to the United States in 1942 and Clara became a naturalized citizen in 1946.
Clara and Alfred moved many times over the past seven decades and lived in New York, North Carolina, Germany, Washington, Wyoming, Texas, Libya Africa, Massachusetts, and Vermont. After Alfred retired from the military, they moved to Alabama, with subsequent moves to Florida, Louisiana, Georgia, and Kentucky. Clara and Alfred moved a final time back to Alabama where he passed away in 2009. They returned to Newfoundland for many visits over the years.
Clara spent her last years in Omaha, Nebraska. She was an excellent seamstress and cook and could knit or crochet just about anything. She made baby blankets for just about every grandchild, and crocheted hundreds of small angels for decoration and keepsakes.
Her patience, sense of humor, and caring attitude will be missed by all of her family in both the U.S. and Canada.
Her parents, three brothers, two sisters, one daughter, and her husband preceded Clara in death. Five children, 14 grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, and 21 great grandchildren survive Clara.
According to her, there were no favorites.
