James Angus "Angie" Henwood 85 years of High Crest Nursing Home, Springhill, passed away Wednesday, August 19, 2009 in High Crest. Born in Springhill, he was a son of the Late Harland & Esther Etta "Essie" (MacDonald) Henwood.
In August of 1939 at the age of 15, Angie started working in the Springhill Coal Mines. Through upgrading, Angie became an Underground manager. In 1954 Angie was a victim of a rock fall underground breaking his back thus ending his coal mining days. In December of 1956 he became a representative of Investors Group as a Financial Planner, retiring in June 1999. A devout Roman Catholic, he was a Charter member of Council 4302 Knights of Columbus for over 50 years, member of the W. H. Smith Assembly 1639 Amherst Forth Degree for over 30 years; served as Grand Knight, District Deputy, State Advocate and many other Council positions; St. John the Baptist Church Parish Council, Finance and building committees; member of the Springhill Lion's Club; Springhill Curling Club; twelve years on the All Saints Springhill Hospital Board; Springhill Police Commission; member of Friends of High Crest Nursing Home and Springhill Miners Museum Society. He was an avid gardener and took great pride in maintaining his home and property.
He will be sadly missed by a brother, Douglas Henwood; sisters, Darlene (Fausto "Butch") Criscanti, Patricia (Pete) DePietro and Judy (Al) Moulton all of Calgary; several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife of 64 years, the former Margaret M. Anderson in 2008; brothers, Maurice, Lawrence, Hall, Melford and Herbert; sisters, Kathleen McGraw and Betty Downey.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to A. H. Brown Funeral Home, 5 McFarlane Street, Springhill, (902 597 2361) from where visitations will be held Friday, August 21, 2009 from 2 - 4 & 7 - 9. Funeral Mass will be held 11:00 am, Saturday, August 22, 2009 in St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, Springhill, with Father David MacDonald officiating. Burial in North Street Roman Catholic Cemetery, Springhill.
