With heartfelt sadness we regret to announce the passing of our dear mother Hilda Duff on August 20, 2009, at home surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Mulgrave, Nova Scotia, she was the daughter of the late John Jack and Florence Rose (DeCoste) MacDonald.
As a devout Christian, Hilda was a member of St. Joseph’s parish, North Sydney.
She is survived by daughters, Heather Duff, North Sydney, Paula (Doug) Shaw, Calgary, AB; son, Terrance (Jane) Duff, North Sydney; and grandsons, Patrick Shaw and Ryan Duff. Also surviving are sisters, Ella Mae Brophy, Mulgrave, Rose MacIsaac, Auld’s Cove, Clarissa (Howie) Goetz, Guelph, ON; brothers, Hank MacDonald, Auld’s Cove, Clarence (Dora) MacDonald, Auld’s Cove, Alphonse (Pat) MacDonald, Elmira, ON. Also left to mourn are numerous nephews and nieces, including Pamela Hadley and Gloria Grady, who she was especially close to.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her former husband and father of her children, Peter Kenneth Duff; sisters Jean Keleher, Guelph, Ontario; Gertrude MacLean, Calgary, Alberta; brothers John MacDonald (Stellarton, NS) and Joseph MacDonald, Guelph, Ontario.
Prior to her retirement in 1990, Hilda was a long time employee of Sobeys Inc in North Sydney. In her younger years, Hilda enjoyed dancing and participating in musical gatherings with her siblings.
She was also an enthusiastic hockey fan and an avid figure skater, a sport she enjoyed for most of her adult life.
Hilda enjoyed simple pleasures and was happiest when she was preparing meals for family functions, attending her grandsons sporting events, visiting with her sisters, and spending time with her beloved golden retriever companion, Mattie.
Hilda was a caring person who always was there to share good times and bad with friends and family. As a loving and devoted mother she exemplified the importance of hard work, integrity, loyalty, and perseverance in facing obstacles. She has been and always will be the heart of our family. She will be dearly missed.
Visitation for Hilda will take place at the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney, on Sunday, August 23, 2009, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday, August 24, 2009 at St. Joseph’s Church in North Sydney at 10 a.m., with Fr. Jake Andrea officiating. Burial will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery.
