We, the family, are saddened to announce the sudden, unexpected passing of Gregory C. Gouthro on Wednesday, May 18, 2011 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Glace Bay, Greg was the son of the late John Joe and Lib Gouthro, Gardiner Mines.
A retired steel plant worker of 33 years, Greg enjoyed cooking, camping, swimming, traveling, curling, watching sports and doing his daily crossword puzzles. He loved fiddle music and Bob Marley, but most of all, Greg loved his family. Although a quiet and gentle man, Greg had a big sense of humour that would light up a room.
Greg's pride and joy were his children and grandchildren. He always made them laugh, and continuously found new ways of entertaining and teasing his grandchildren. He was a great dad, who always encouraged his children to follow their own path.
Greg will be deeply missed by his loving wife, Marlene (McIntyre) Gouthro; children, Natalie Gouthro (Grant Wiesner), Mark (Michelle) Gouthro, Amy Gouthro (Bryan MacDonald) and stepson, Shaun (Karen) MacIntyre. He was a dear, loving and funny Poppy and Granddad to Elly, Kateri, Molly, Emma, and Andrew. Greg is also survived by his brothers, Douglas, Gordie (Rosie); sisters, Irene (Gerald) Gilfedder, Sr. Paul Marie Gouthro, SA, Betty Stubbert, Donna (Tom) Spencer, Linda (Tom) Browner, and Claire (Kevin) MacNeil; as well as a large extended family.
Besides his parents, Greg was predeceased by his wife of 28 years and the mother of his children, Helen (Tynski) Gouthro (in 2001) and brothers Paul, Kenny, and Russell.
In keeping with Greg’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A visitation will be held at T.W. Curry’s funeral home on Sunday, May 22, 2011 from 6-9 p.m. A funeral mass celebrating Greg’s life will be held on Monday, May 23, 2011 at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Fatima, Sydney River.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Heart and Stroke Foundation or to a charity of choice.
