Rev. Leonard A. MacKinnon, died peacefully at MacGillivary Guest Home on Sunday, August 23, 2009, following a lengthy illness.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Stephen N. and Mary Ann (MacDonald) MacKinnon.
Father Leonard graduated from St. Francis Xavier University in 1951. He entered Holy Heart Seminary and was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Antigonish in 1955. Over the years, Father Leonard ministered in numerous parishes throughout the Diocese including South West Margaree; St. Anthony, Glace Bay; St. Margaret’s, St. Margaret’s Village; St. Michael’s, Baddeck; St. Anne’s, Thorburn; Christ The King, Trenton; Holy Family, Glace Bay; St. Eugene’s, Dominion and St. Leo’s, Glace Bay.
Upon retirement, he moved to Xavier apartments in Sydney and later, with declining health, became a resident of MacGillivray Guest Home. Father Leonard, fondly known to his childhood friends and fellow priests, as ‘Doc’, was dearly loved by family, friends and parishioners. His friendly and compassionate manner endeared him to all. His loving support, caring attitude, and gentle humour will be a source of fond memories for all of us.
He is survived by one brother, John, Toronto and sisters, Doris (Michael Laffin), New Waterford and Sr. Hilda, C.N.D., Sydney. He is also survived by sisters-in-law, Cecilia, St. John’s, Nfld., Delories, Sydney and Friederike, Phoenix, Arizona. Father Leonard will also be dearly missed by his many nieces, nephews and their families.
He was predeceased by brothers, Wilfred, Michael, Ronald, Stephen, Gordon and sisters, Evelyn Roach, Claire Della-Calce, Sr. Regis and Irene MacAdam.
Visitation for Fr. MacKinnon will take place today (Tuesday) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel with a prayer vigil at 8:30 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church. Burial to take place in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
