It is with great sadness that we, the family announce the unexpected passing of Lloyd Augustine Petrie, 74, of Dingwall, at the Buchanan Memorial Hospital, surrounded by his loving wife and family.
Lloyd was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and uncle. Born in Middle Harbour, Victoria Country, N.S., he was the son of the late John and Hazel (Dunphy) Petrie.
Lloyd worked across Cape Breton Island, Halifax and Newfoundland with Trainor’s Ltd. and Porter’s Ltd. He retired from the Municipality of Victoria County after 25 years of dedicated service. Lloyd was a committed paper route driver for Cape Breton Post and Chronicle Herald. Lloyd enjoyed working in the woods as well as making beautiful crafted Christmas decorations which many would come to see. He also spent a lot of time working on ornaments for their yard. Lloyd had great carpentry skills and would put them to use whenever work needed to be done.
Lloyd was a friend to all who knew him and he would offer drives to those who were in need. He loved to listen to fiddle music and enjoyed many of the Scottish concerts across the island in the summer. His favourite past times were playing cards and bingo with his beloved wife, Margaret (Peggy Burton) Petrie. He was a dedicated volunteer and member to the Cabot Volunteer Fire Department for over 30 years with some of that time as deputy chief and chief.
Lloyd is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Margaret Petrie; son, Lloyd Petrie (Mike), Amherst; daughters, Michelle Rambeau (Joey), Smelt Brook, Catherine MacKinnon (Francis), Sugar Loaf, Kimberley Rambeau (David), Grey’s Hollow, and Georgeina MacKinnon (Robert), Dominion; grandchildren, Stephen Lloyd Rambeau (Elaine), Elliot Rambeau, Bianca Petrie, Alexander Petrie, Cassie MacKinnon, Dalton Rambeau, Ali MacKinnon, Mya MacKinnon, Maurisa MacKinnon; great-granddaughter, Margaret Anne Rambeau; sister, Alexandra Dixon; brother, Raymond Petrie; mother-in-law, Mary (Stewart) Burton; and daughters-in-law, Lucy MacKinnon and Fonny Miller.
Lloyd was predeceased by his parents, John and Hazel (Dunphy) Petrie; son, Maurice Petrie; three children in infancy; grandson, Simon Boyd; sisters, Catherine Petrie and Mary Susan Brewer; father-in-law, Alex Burton; brothers-in-law, George and Jimmy Burton.
Lloyd was a dedicated member of St. Joseph’s parish, Dingwall. He was a very committed participant in the Terry Fox Run and never missed the annual walk.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Fillmore & Whitman Funeral Home. Visitation will begin today (Tuesday) at 7 p.m. until the funeral service on Wednesday, Aug. 26 at 2 p.m. both at St. Joseph’s Church, Dingwall, with Rev. Dan MacDonald officiating. Burial to follow in St. Joseph’s Parish Cemetery.
