Michael Daniel MacKenzie - 90 passed away peacefully in the Shiretown Nursing Home, Pictou on Saturday, May 21 2011. Born in Maitland, he was a son of the late Daniel and Harriett Mackenzie. Michael served as gunner with “D” Troop 87 Canadian Medium Battery R.C.A., receiving the 1939-45 Star, mentioned in despatchs, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp and a note in his Record of Service and a Certificate for outstanding good service and showing great devotion to duty. He worked with Tibetts Paints in Trenton for many years. Michael was known throughout the Durham area for his lovely vegetable garden and his kind heart to share the lovely produce. He always enjoyed a good game of cards especially cribbage. He shared his love for horses by displaying many pictures of horses and horse plowing competitions. Michael is survived by his sister in-law Sadie McKenzie, Pictou; niece, Cathy MacDonald, Pictou; nephew, Michael McKenzie, New Glasgow; nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews; special friends David and Bonnie Saunders and Sandra Malenfant and all the others that touched his heart throughout the years. He was predeceased by his wife Florence, brothers Leander and George. Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitations or funeral service at Michael’s request. A public graveside service will be held on Tuesday May 24 at 2 PM at the Heatherdale Memorial Gardens Sylvester. Family flowers only. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made the Canadian Cancer Society or charity of your choice. Arrangements are under the direction of McLaren Funeral Service, Pictou.
