It is with great sadness that we, the family of Roy Thomson, announce the peaceful passing of our ‘Da’ at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Roy had many jobs in his lifetime from delivering milk and groceries to brick laying to coal mining. Roy worked in the coal mines for 31 years. He was president of the UMW of A Union District # 26. Roy was also a member of various groups such as volunteering for A.F.T.E.C. and a proud member of Epworth United Church and the Cursillo movement. Roy was also an active player with the Huffers & Puffers hockey team and he bowled at Heather Lanes. He also enjoyed spending his summers at Gillis Lake with his family.
Roy is survived by his wife of 51 years, Gertrude (Butler) Thomson, his daughter June (Terry) MacLean; sons, Willie (Valerie), Eric (Mary), Keith (Margie) and David; brothers, Al of Sackville and LeRoy of Ontario and sisters, Audrey, Mary , Glace Bay Elizabeth, Vivian and Bonnie, Ontario. Roy is also survived by 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Roy was predeceased by his parents, LeRoy and Hattie and by brother, Gerald and infant brother, Adrian and by daughter-in-law, Tish Gale.
Visitation for the late Roy Thomson will take place today from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Patten Funeral Home, 71 Union St., Glace Bay. Funeral service will be held at Warden United Church, Thursday, August 27, 2009 at 2 p.m. with Nancy Whitney officiating. Burial at Greenwood Cemetery. There will be a luncheon to follow.
Memorial donations may be made to the Palliative Care Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital or to the Cape Breton Cancer Center.
