McLean, Charles H. G., 78, Truro, passed away August 24, 2009 at home. Born in Wainwright, Alberta on December 4, 1930, he was a son of the late James and Marie (Boudreau) McLean. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Charles had 14 years of service in the Canadian Armed Forces (3rd Regt. Royal Canadian Horse artillery) and served in Korea, Germany and Canada. He retired from Health and Welfare Canada as a Client Service Officer. He received the Canadian and United Nations Medal for service in Korea, the Special Forces Medal, the Peace Keeping Medal, the Canadian Forces Decoration and the 50 Year Queens Jubilee Medal for his volunteer services in the community. He was a charter member and Past Faithful Navigator-4th Degree Knight of Columbus, Truro, charter member and Past Financial Secretary-Stella Maris Paris K of C, Louisbourg, charter member and Past Admiral-St. Clements Parish K of C, Dartmouth, Past Grand Knights-Cobequid Council K of C, Truro, Past President-Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 26, Truro, Past President and Founder-Tawaak Housing Assc., Halifax, Past member-St. Vincent De Paul Society, Immaculate Conception Parish- Choir Member, Lector and Eucharistic Minister, Past Board Member-Canadian National Housing and Renewal Assc., Ottawa, Ont., Past Board Member-Colchester County Children’s Aid Society and Family Services, Past Block Captain-Neighborhood Watch, Past Block Captain-Cancer Society, Past Business Chairman- United Way. Charles was a certified locksmith and his hobbies included chair caning, repairing antique clocks, knitting and military medal mounting. He also enjoyed dancing and spending time with his family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Ruby Margaret (VanBuskirk); sons, Patrick, Alberta, Paul, Toronto, Ralph, Sydney; stepchildren, Paulette (Donald) Mattinson, Middle Stewiacke, Ray Higgins, Truro, Darlene (Ian) Conway, Middle Stewiacke, Roderick (Teresa) Higgins, Truro; four grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; 11 step-great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife, Elsie (Zella) (O’Connell) McLean; brothers, Joseph, Fred, Frank, William, Julius, John; sisters, Florence Sauvie, Alice Berry, Gertrude McLean and a sister in infancy. Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 27th from 7-9pm in Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow Street, Truro, with a Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #26 Tribute Service at 7pm, followed by a Knights of Columbus Tribute Service. Funeral Mass will be on Friday, August 28th at 2pm in Immaculate Conception Church, 669 Prince Street, Truro. Interment in Robie Street Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Nova Scotia Knights of Columbus Charitable Foundation or the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 26 Poppy Fund.
