Loving husband and dear father, John F. ‘Effie’ MacNeil, peacefully passed away at home Monday, August 24, 2009.
Son of Ronald and Theresa MacNeil, John was born on May 15, 1925.
John is survived by his wife, Dorothy (Gillis) MacNeil; daughters, Lois MacNeil-Parker (Scott), Truro, Cathy MacNeil, Sydney, Jo-Ann Robertson, Sydney, Phyllis MacNeil (Mike), Halifax, Theresa McCarthy (Dan), Sydney, Dorothy MacNeil, Sydney and Sheri MacNeil, Halifax. John was blessed with six grandchildren, Mark, Matthew, Landon, Terry, Donnie and Robin and five great-grandchildren. John had three departed sisters, Kathleen, Grace and Tina. A niece, Colleen, resides in Dartmouth.
John was a CNR employee at the main freight office in Sydney, NS, until his retirement. President of the union, he worked tirelessly for his fellow employees. A man of strong faith, John was a devote member of Sacred Heart Church in Sydney. John was a talented athlete in his day and was once scouted by the NHL. He had a passion for all sports but especially his hockey and baseball. He was a member of Branch 12 Legion in Sydney.
There will be no visitation. A funeral mass will take place Thursday, August 27, 2009 at 2 p.m. at Sacred Heart Church, Sydney.
