It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend, Margaret Stevens, 81, on Saturday, May 21, 2011, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, surrounded by family and friends.
Born in Eskasoni, July 5, 1929, Margaret was the daughter of the late Richard and Bridget (Sylliboy) Denny.
She was a member of Holy Family parish, Eskasoni, and a devotee of St. Anne, having made at least 30 pilgrimages to St. Anne DeBeaupre and a trip to Medjugorje. Margaret loved to sew, knit, and quilt, and much of her handiwork was a part of the gifts she always remembered to provide to her many family members at special occasions.
She loved to drive everywhere, especially to Maine for blueberry picking with her family and friends. Cooking, bingo, and Live at 5 rounded-out Margaret’s day. No one was more proud of their Mi’kmaq culture than Margaret.
She is survived by sons, Spencer (Arlene), Robert (Audrey), Darren (Gail), Richard and Dillon, all of Eskasoni, and Gerry (Laurianne), Membertou; daughters, Angela, Rhodena, Elizabeth, Beverly, Jacqueline and Sharon, of Eskasoni, and Shirley, Sydney, and by 44 grandchildren and 71 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by sisters, Josephine (Leonard) Paul, Virginia (Joe J.) Googoo; foster brother, Ernie Knockwood; brother-in-law, Ronald Stevens, Wagmatcook; three godchildren, Elizabeth Sylliboy, Vivian Basque and Mary Poulette.
She was predeceased by her husband, Benedict, her children, Arnold, Clifford, Beverly Ann, Marcia, Kevin, Sheila, and foster child, Karen; also by two grandchildren, one great-grandchild, brothers, Matthew R., Noel R., Joseph R., Levi R., John R., and sisters, Martha and Angeline.
Visitation for the late Mrs. Stevens will take place after 7 p.m. this evening (Tuesday May 24) in the Gabriel Centre, Esaksoni. Funeral mass will be celebrated Thursday, May 26 at 10:30 a.m. in Holy Family Church, Rev. Martin MacDougall officiating. Interment in the parish cemetery, Eskasoni.
