The death of Dorene L Porter, age 87, widow of Garnet Porter, of Amherst and River Hebert, occurred peacefully at the Gables Lodge on Saturday, May 21, 2011.
Born in Saint John, NB, she was a daughter of the late Robert and Sarah Jane (Maguire) Smith.
In younger years she was an avid skater having won figure skating trophies. She loved Bingo and enjoyed that throughout her life. Living her life without a car she became a fast walker outpacing any who tried to walk with her.
She will be sadly missed by her daughters, Lois Ripley (Shawn) of Trenton, NS, Mary Jane Porter (Chico Burrell) of Cambridge, ON; sons, Robert (Gail) and Joseph "Corky" (Judy), both of River Hebert East, Maurice of Amherst; a sister, Elsie Lawson of Saint John, NB; a brother, Lloyd Smith (Germaine) of Quispamsis, NB; sister-in-law, Terry Smith of BC; 10 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents she was predeceased by her husband Garnet, a daughter and a son at birth and brothers, Maurice and Earle.
Dorene's remains have been entrusted into the care of the Furlong Jones Funeral Home, Amherst (667-8777) from where visitation will be held Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. The funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, May 25, 2011 at 2 pm. Burial in the River Hebert Cemetery.
