LEES, EARL - It is with great sadness that the family of the late Earl Arthur Ralston Lees, age 91, of Amherst and formerly of New Annan announce his passing on Friday, May 20, 2011 at Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre, Upper Nappan, NS. Born in Springhill, NS on February 21, 1920, he was a son of the late Ambrose and Annie (Bagnell) Lees. Earl joined the Canadian Army in Halifax in June 1940 and sailed overseas in November 1942 where he served in Sicily, Italy and Holland returning home on the Queen Elizabeth in September 1945. He worked in the coal mines in Springhill from 1945 until 1953. Earl worked in both the Springhill and Dorchester Institutions from 1953 until his retirement in 1981. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. Earl also enjoyed team sports such as baseball in his younger years and team darts in his later years. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was a loving father to his three daughters Jean (Ken) Snowdon of Sackville, NB, Joan (Carl) Gilroy of Fort Lawrence and Barbara Hines (Bruce MacDonnell) of Oakfield, NS, grandchildren Rick Snowdon of Edmonton, AB, Kim Sproul of Sackville, Rod Gilroy of Amherst, Susan Bourgeois of Amherst, Lindsay Hines of Enfield, NS and Juliana Hines of Red Deer, AB; great grandchildren Jenna and Amy Snowdon, Chris and Victoria Sproul, Leigh-Anne and Andrew Gilroy, Melissa Ross and Ashley Bourgeois and many nieces and nephews. Earl was predeceased by his wife of 65 years the former Marjorie Bryson, sisters Daisy Aitchison and Geneva Gilroy and brothers Douglas, Joseph and Robert.
At Earl’s request there will be no visitation or funeral service. Memorial donations in Earl’s memory may be made to the Cumberland County Hospice/Palliative Care Society, Northport Cemetery or charity of your choice through Campbell’s Funeral Home, Amherst.
