It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of our dear mother, grandmother, sister and friend, Marjorie Billard, on Monday, May 23, 2011 at the Northside Community Guest Home, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Rose Blanche, NL., she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Annie (Smith) Collier.
Marjorie was a caring, kind lady who in an unassuming yet profound way touched the lives of many friends and family. Her belief in the goodness of others and always looking on the bright side of life left her with a smile that brightened us all even in her dying hours.
Marjorie moved from Newfoundland to North Sydney in 1957 and provided complimentary Bed and Breakfast to all her relatives and friends and any others that might be travelling to and from her native province. She was well known for her delicious cooking and baking. Everybody marveled at her ability to cater a meal to unexpected guests that might arrive at the magic dinner hour.
On Ingraham Street in North Sydney, where she lived for many years before moving to the seniors’ complex she was fondly called Aunt Margy by all the neighborhood children. They loved her home-made cookies and she treated each one like family.
She worked very hard in her life, overcoming many obstacles, but always made sure that "Jack", the love of her life took priority and was taken care of. For a number of years before his death in 2004 he was able to reciprocate that same dedication to her as she lived with dementia. However in earlier retirement years they both enjoyed many exciting card games and other activities, always together.
And together they moved into the Northside Community Guest Home in December 2001. Marjorie has since received all the love and affection from the staff there that she so freely gave to others over the years. Her family wishes to make special acknowledgement of this special gift that never went unnoticed and will always be treasured.
Marjorie was a devoted member of St. John the Baptist Anglican Church. In her earlier years she enjoyed the Altar Guild, ACW and other church functions. She is an honorary member of the North Sydney Senior Citizens and Pensioners Club.
She is survived by her two sons, Gordon (Joyce) Billard, North Sydney, Jack (Brenda) Billard, Halifax; her two daughters, Nora Marion Lockhart, Florida, Marilyn (Terry) Ivey, North Sydney; her daughter-in-law, Joan MacGean, North Sydney; her brothers, Gerald Collier, Port aux Basques, Nfld., Sandy Collier, Sambro, N.S., Ronald Collier, Rose Blanche, Nfld.; her sisters, Loretta (Leander) Gillard, Sudbury, Ont., Bessie Price, Centralia, Washington; her 12 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her loving husband, John W. Billard; her son, Douglas; two brothers, Wesley, Howard; sisters, Cassie, Joyce, Edna; also by stepbrothers, John Robert, Stanley, Wilson and her step sisters, Mabel, Florence, Annie, Maude and Clara.
Visitation for Marjorie will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral service will be held 3 p.m. Thursday, in St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, with Rev. Fev Arnold, officiating. Burial will follow in Lakeside Cemetery.
