It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Margaret 'Peggy' Rose MacDonald Rankin, age 90, on Thursday, August 27, 2009, surrounded by her family, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney.
Born in Judique, Inverness County, she was the daughter of the late Dougall F. and Theresa (Chisholm) MacDonald.
As a young woman, she worked in Boston before returning to Sydney to marry Donald Rankin who was the love of her life for 57 years. In her home she extended great warmth and hospitality-a cup of tea and a bite to eat were the rule. Peggy was a lady and the heart of the home. She and Donald welcomed family, friends, neighbours and members of the horse community from across the country. She enjoyed all aspects of Donmar Farms and its horses. She was the first woman inducted into the Cape Breton Horsemen Association Hall of Fame (1997). She was deeply proud of her family and their accomplishments. She has great personal faith which influenced her life.
She is survived by sons, Doug 'Sonny', Sydney, Cahill (Brenda), Dundas, Ontario, Donnie (Joan), Windsor, Ontario; and daughters Theresa (Albert) MacMaster, Halifax, Donna Rankin Neville, Balls Creek, Darlene (Rick) Costello, Beechmont, Mary Lou Rankin Denton, Balls Creek. She is also survived by her grandchildren Colin, John (Lori), Cathy and Debra Rankin, Glen (Linda) Rankin and Tracey (Steve) MacAlister, Ryan and Rhea MacMaster, James and Margaret Neville, Jeanette (Todd), Jennifer, Amber and Lindsay (Tom) Rankin, Josh Costello and Jesse, Kaleigh and Rankin Denton and 14 great grandchildren, as well as brother Rannie (Marie) MacDonald, Long Point and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband Donald (2002); son Joe (2001) and daughter-in-law Carol (2009) and also by her brothers Bill, Jock, Jamie and sisters Charlotte, Catherine and Isobel.
Visitation for Peggy Rankin will be held on Saturday, August 29 from 7-9 p.m. and Sunday, August 30 from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. at T.W.Curry Parkview Chapel. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Monday, August 30, 2009 at St. Mary's Church, Frenchvale with Fr. Paul Abbass officiating. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Peggy’s memory can be made to St. Mary's Church, Frenchvale.
The family would like to thank Drs. Dobson and Coish, the staff of the Northside General and homecare worker Leanne Jessome for their compassion and care.
